Student Workshops

Shakes 101

Two actor/teachers come to your classroom to "Shake" it up! Students get Shakespeare in their mouths and in their bones. In Richmond Shakespeare's signature fast-paced and interactive style, workshop leaders draw on Elizabethan history, culture, and performance techniques to jump start students' enthusiasm for Shakespeare and to emphasize the ways in which his plays were originally meant to be seen and heard rather than read.

Size Limit: 30
Length: 60 minutes (a 90-minute version can also be created)
Cost without show: $150/hour
Cost with show: $100/hour
Age range: Grades 5-12, and older

The Play's the Thing

Also fast paced and "on your feet," this workshop prepares students for an investigation of a particular play or a performance of a play. The two actor/teachers focus on Shakespeare's use of words and sounds and familiarize students with the plot (and subplots) and the characters.

Size Limit: 30
Length: 60 minutes
Cost without show: $150/hour
Cost with show: $100/hour
Age range: Grades 5-12, and older

Words, Words, Words

How do actors take the words from the page to the stage? In this workshop, students become players as they investigate the text by getting up on their feet and reading selected scenes. Two actor/teachers help them investigate the clues in the text that Shakespeare used to guide his players. (He had to--there was virtually no time for rehearsal!) These clues help us understand character and emotion in a way that gives students a greater awareness of the characters' motives. Students also compare Elizabethan staging techniques to modern ones. This class is especially appropriate for drama classes, but it's also fun and useful for non-actors.

Size limit: 20
Length: 90 minutes
Cost without show: $115/hour
Cost with show: $90/hour
Age range: 9-12 and older

All the World's a Stage

In this class, students teach the teachers. Actor/teachers perform a scene from Shakespeare and students give suggestions for staging. Professional actors lend their expertise on the choices that they have or would make in a scene, demonstrating that theater, particularly Shakespearean theater, is a living, breathing medium and not merely words on a page. Students develop communication skills, experience the artistic process first hand, and learn to cooperate with others. (Note: only scenes from the current Richmond Shakespeare production will be used.)

Class size: 50
Length: 60 minutes
Cost without show: $175/hour
Cost with show: $150/hour

Conflict Resolution

This workshop is created to allow students to explore the issue of intolerance and violence through an "on-your-feet" artistic experience. As they perform (or "play") scenes from Romeo and Juliet, students dissect the language, examine the dramatic situation as it unfolds, and contemplate the ways in which different actions might result in different outcomes. Students learn conflict-resolution skills throughout the process.

Size limit: 30
Length: 90 minutes
Cost without show: $150/hour
Cost with show: $100/hour

Boy Meets Girl Meet Will

Combine three scenes that dramatize interactions between boys and girls (or men and women) with a classroom full real boys and girls, and let the fun begin!

Grades 6-8: A Midsummer Night's Dream, As You Like It, and Romeo and Juliet
Grades 9-12: Macbeth, Twelfth Night, and The Taming of the Shrew
Size limit: 30
Length: 60 minutes
Cost without show: $150/hour
Cost with show: $100/hour
